For the first time since the original Festival, a new president and treasurer were elected. Iceland was the featured country.
It was decided to forego the sponsor packets, which had been successful in the early years of the Festival but produced little results in the past few years. The exhibitor booth prices were increased slightly. Cash registers were used at each food house instead of food tickets. Entrance fees were increased to $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors and students.
When Kari Keclik resigned as treasurer, Barbro Linden again took on this responsibility. Jette Bender took responsibility for coordinating the food houses and Karla Olterman accepted chairperson of the raffle. Two categories of raffle prizes were established with the expensive items for $5.00 and the others for $1.00. George Lane took on the chairs for publicity and the volunteers.
Selling exhibitor booths was going slowly. The Cobb Civic Center informed us that Memorial Day weekend would not available in 2001 due to high school graduations there. The Board agreed to the first weekend in May 2001 for the next Festival. The Board voted in favor of obtaining additional insurance to cover alcohol-related lawsuits.
By April 2000 the investments of $19.000 from 12/01/98 had increased to $31,532, the $19,000 from 01/15/99 had increased to $23,241 and the $15,000 CD from 10/22/99 was now worth $15,308. Very good returns but the equity market had not yet started its downward spiral.
Two scholarships were awarded in 2000. The $2500 Jeffrey Scott Linden scholarship to Elisabet Grontoft, a Norwegian student at Georgia State and the $1500 Stover scholarship to Annika Stens, a Finnish student at Kennesaw State.
The food houses were put back to the original arrangement with three on the east side and two on the south side. The bakery was moved back to the upper level and was contracted to Lotte and Vagn Nielsen.
The Saturday hours were shortened to 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Attendance was 2070 and the Festival operated at a loss, due to the $4,000 for scholarships. The program book was again 28 pages.
Bob Reed was the MC on Sat. and Laurie Fulton on Sun. The returning entertainment included:
Scandinavian Folk Dancers of Raleigh
Viking Age Club Village
The Scandinavian Festival Choir
Lela Band from Atlanta
The new entertainment was:
Einar Juliusson from Iceland
Diana Jarvi from Finland
The post-festival party was held at Paul Conradsen’s home on Sept. 30, 2000.
