Sweden was the country-in-focus. Long discussions took place about improving the food houses. A combination platter was again considered but the details could not be worked out. Jette Bender took on the coordination of the food houses. Some concerns with the food houses were the lack of profit, expensive purchases, and poor use of leftovers.

A 5K run on Saturday morning was accepted in principle but it did not happen in 2001. Birgitte Bindeman brought some new ideas to the children’s area. George Lane took over the website and revamped it. Göran Rygert and Dennis Carlson took responsibility for the entertainment committee.

The cultural area was relocated to the lower level, the area for the country-in-focus was also placed on the lower level, and the children used the meeting room on the upper level. No desserts were sold in the food houses other than Danish dumpling fritters and Norwegian waffles. Hot dogs were sold in the Danish food house.

A carnival was set up in the parking lot and it did provide income but the Board decided not to have it again because the atmosphere of the carnival was not compatible with the Festival. The post office box was moved from Roswell to the post office near the Lutheran Church of the Apostles.

Two scholarships in the amount of $2000 each were awarded in 2001; the Jeffrey Scott Linden scholarship to Linda Maria Hallbeck, a Swedish student at Brenau University and the Stover scholarship to Tomas Brynjolfsson, an Icelandic student at the University of Georgia.

Ed From printed 20,000 flyers that were distributed to a number of schools in Cobb and Douglas counties. The governor of Georgia declared May 5, the day of the Festival opening, as Scandinavian Day in Georgia. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners issued a similar proclamation.

Instead of a picture of the president in the program book, a picture of the Officers and Board of Directors was used. The main food plate price was increased to $5.00. Food tickets were used again instead of cashiers at each food house.

Karla Olterman arranged meetings with the Consuls to seek their advice and support. This had not been done previously.

Attendance was 2300 and the financial results showed a break-even situation, due to the $4,000 for scholarships. The program book increased to 36 pages.

Bob Reed was the MC on Sat. and Laurie Fulton on Sun. The returning entertainment included:

Scandinavian Folk Dancers of Raleigh
Scandinavian Festival Choir
The new entertainment was:

Swedish Connection, Lars Holm and Gunnar Bernstrup
Georgia Brass Band
Ernie Sandquist Scandinavian Trio
Swedish American Good Music Band

For the first time, some musical entertainment was provided on the patio outside of the building entrance. A Lucia ceremony was performed during the opening ceremonies. A closing ceremony on Sunday evening with a transfer of flags was initiated.

A critique dinner was held at the Delkwood Grill on May 15, 2001. The volunteer party was held at Paul Conradsen’s home on June 2, 2001.
